Words

I just started reading a book called 'Words That Hurt, Words That Heal', by Carole Mayhall. It really got me thinking on my words. Are my words like a fountain of life, or are they like a babbling brook, running on the surface, rushing helter-skelter over the rocks? I'm a fast talker, and sometimes I don't really stop and think about what my words might do to others before I say them. "The written word is a powerful thing, you've got to be careful with it." -Mo Fulchart from "Inkheart". I know that as a writer, I was given a gift of being able to put words on paper and create a story, another world for people to delve into. But I often use this gift for more entertainment than for what God would want me to do. I don't write bad things, but they aren't necessarily christian things. I often have doubts about my writing when I think about that. Anyways, I should use this gift that God has given me for His glory, and to use it to introduce others to Him through my work. A quote by C.S. Lewis comes to mind while I'm typing this, 'Don't shine so that others can see you, shine so that through you, others can see Him.' It remind's me of my writing. But I still have mixed thoughts about that. But this post isn't so that I can tell all about my troubles. ;) I'm here to encourage others to think about their words before they say them. I know I fall very short in this area of my life, and I need to work on it badly, but maybe if we christian's encourage each other through prayer, we can shine so that through us, others can see Him. :)

  1. There's a saying, 'Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.' But that's totally off! We, as Christians need to be SO careful to watch what we say, so that we can be lights to non-believers.

  2. Words are like a tube of toothpaste. Once you squeeze it out, it's impossible to put it back in. You can apologize about your words, but you can never undo the hurt they can do.
